What PastHere Seoul is for
PastHere Seoul is an Android city-history app for travelers and residents who want archival photographs, sourced place stories, maps, themed collections, and finishable walks while exploring Seoul. The developer page documents 300 Seoul places and Time Lens comparisons at 30 selected pilot locations, with field verification still ongoing.
Use it as a history layer after setting up a primary navigation app. It is not live navigation, an emergency tool, a complete itinerary, or proof that every neighborhood has a nearby story.
When it may fit
PastHere Seoul may fit an Android traveler who wants to:
- find stories by place, route, district, theme, or era;
- compare selected archival scenes with a current view;
- inspect dates, source links, image credits, and license information;
- follow a documented history walk; or
- keep bookmarks, notes, photos, and progress on the device.
The checked official pages document Korean, English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. They do not document a Korean phone number, Korean account, Korean ID, passport, or card-payment requirement for the current free download path. The exact first-launch flow was not independently tested, so stop and recheck the official listing and privacy policy if an unexpected identity, payment, or permission prompt appears.
How to try it safely
- Open only the official Google Play listing and confirm the title, OffVoice publisher, and package
com.offvoice.pasthere_seoul. - Review the current device compatibility, price, ads label, update date, Data Safety panel, and privacy policy before installing.
- Start without location. Browse the home feed, search, map, collections, saved stories, or a route first.
- Choose a place already on your itinerary and inspect its date, source, image credit, and license.
- Compare any walk with your primary map, opening hours, closures, weather, daylight, accessibility needs, and on-site instructions.
- Grant foreground location only if nearby-story sorting is useful. A nearby result is not navigation or safety advice.
- Use Time Lens only where the current app offers it and review the camera or photo prompt before continuing.
- Export anything worth keeping before deleting local data, uninstalling, or changing devices.
Location, local data, ads, and diagnostics
The privacy policy says location is requested only after the nearby-story action, read once in memory for nearby-card selection, not stored on the device, and not sent as exact coordinates to the OffVoice server, Firebase Analytics, or the advertising SDK. Background location is not used. OpenStreetMap can still process the IP address, network information, and tile requests for the map area viewed.
Notes, attached photos, bookmarks, route progress, and related local settings are described as device-local and excluded from Android backup and device-transfer extraction. The app includes local deletion and user-triggered export or sharing routes. Uninstalling removes local app data.
The free listing contains ads. The policy separately documents Google Mobile Ads, Firebase Crashlytics, Firebase Analytics with selectable measurement levels, and OpenStreetMap processing. Basic limited Analytics measurement is the default; Detailed requires permission, and Off stops subsequent Analytics transmission. The live Google Play Data Safety panel remains the developer-provided summary to recheck before installation.
When not to rely on it
Skip PastHere Seoul if the Android device is incompatible, the app does not fit the day’s route, a permission or identity prompt is unexpected, the required content does not load, or current signs and conditions conflict with the app. Keep NAVER Map or another primary navigation tool, saved Korean destination text, essential transport and payment fallbacks, and emergency information separate from this app.
PastHere Seoul is optional. A traveler can complete the trip safely without it.
The current privacy policy (effective September 2, 2026, app v0.1.2) describes Basic, Detailed, and Off analytics choices. Basic limited measurement operates by default without an Analytics app-instance ID or advertising ID; limited usage signals may still be sent. Detailed measurement requires the user to allow it. Choosing Off stops subsequent Firebase Analytics transmission; it does not itself delete information already processed. Exact coordinates, personal notes, photos, and bookmark lists are excluded from analytics events. Allowed installation-campaign codes can be processed for attribution; Off prevents their external transmission. Advertising, crash diagnostics, and map-tile processing have separate rules. These are developer disclosures, not an independent device test.
