How to Transfer at Seoul Station: AREX, KTX and Subway
Seoul Station is a connected complex, not one ticket hall.

Check the full name of your next train, not just “Seoul Station.” AREX and KORAIL have different ticket areas and gates; Seoul Metro Lines 1 and 4 use the urban-transit system. Follow the bilingual overhead signs for Airport Railroad, KTX / Trains, Line 1 or Line 4. Do not enter a gate until the operator, destination and departure time match your ticket or route.
If you arrive by AREX and continue by KTX, leave the AREX paid area as directed, follow KTX / Trains, and check the KORAIL departure board before going to the platform. In the reverse direction, leave the KORAIL platform area, follow Airport Railroad, then choose the correct AREX service and ticket. With large luggage, a child or reduced mobility, use the elevator route and build a generous buffer rather than relying on the shortest walking estimate.

First identify the next operator
Look at the next booking or route and say its operator aloud: AREX, KORAIL or Seoul Metro. A destination such as Seoul, Busan or the airport does not by itself tell you which gate to use.
AREX operates the airport-railroad leg. KORAIL operates KTX and other intercity trains. Seoul Metro Line 1 and Line 4 are urban-transit routes and use the metropolitan fare system. Their halls connect, but their tickets, gates and departure information are not interchangeable.
Photograph or screenshot the train number, destination, date, departure time and seat before entering the complex. If a staff member helps, show that complete record rather than saying only KTX or airport.
Build a realistic transfer buffer
Do not treat the time between two timetable entries as walking time. The transfer can include leaving one paid area, locating a lift, crossing a concourse, collecting or buying a ticket, checking a live departure board and reaching a platform before boarding closes.
Add more buffer when you have large luggage, a stroller, reduced mobility, an uncollected rail ticket, separate travelers, a meal stop or a first visit. Also add time if the first train can be delayed. A protected through-ticket and two separately purchased tickets may have different missed-connection rules, so do not assume the next operator will rebook a separate journey for free.
If the connection has become tight, stop shopping and go to an information or ticket counter with both journey records. Ask which staffed route is safest. Running through gates with luggage creates a larger failure than missing one sign.
AREX to KTX
After leaving the AREX train, keep the airport-railroad ticket or transport card available until the exit is complete. Follow the overhead signs for KTX or Trains; do not follow Line 1 or Line 4 merely because they also say Seoul Station.
Once in the KORAIL area, check the live departure board for the train number, final destination, departure time and platform. A city on the route is not enough because several trains can leave in the same direction. If the platform is not yet posted, wait in the concourse where the board remains visible.
Use the ticket channel required by the KORAIL booking. A reservation screenshot, payment record and passport are useful fallbacks, but they do not replace a valid ticket if the operator requires another step. If the booking came from a third party, distinguish the third-party voucher from the rail ticket before going downstairs.
KTX to AREX
After leaving the KORAIL train, follow signs toward Airport Railroad. Do not board a Seoul Metro train just because the airport symbol or another transfer line appears nearby.
At the AREX area, confirm whether you need the Express Train or the All-stop Train. They are different services with different stopping patterns and ticket conditions. Check the airport terminal on your flight record and allow time to reach the correct terminal after arrival.
Use the official AREX timetable and ticket channel for the current day. A time copied from an old article is not a live departure. If a ticket machine or foreign card fails, use a staffed counter or another currently supported official sales channel instead of repeatedly charging the same card.
Seoul Metro Line 1 or Line 4 to AREX or KTX
On the subway, prepare to exit at Seoul Station, then follow the signs for the next operator after the gate. Line 1 and Line 4 are separate lines with different platform directions. Verify the line number and destination before boarding the first leg as well as after the transfer.
If continuing to AREX, follow Airport Railroad. If continuing to KTX, follow KTX / Trains. Do not use an exit number as your only navigation target: an exit can lead outdoors while the transfer route remains inside the complex.
Your subway transport card pays the urban-transit leg. It is not automatically a KTX ticket, and it does not prove that an AREX Express Train reservation exists. Keep each fare product separate and show only the relevant one at its gate. Step 1 — Stop at the first reliable sign
When you leave a platform, move out of the passenger flow and read the full overhead sign. Match the English operator name and symbol with the next booking. If two arrows point toward different systems, do not choose based on crowd size.
Use the author-owned station photograph as a recognition aid, not as permanent navigation. Construction, gate layouts and temporary routes can change after the photograph date.
Step 2 — Stay on the signed level and route
Follow repeated signs. If the expected operator disappears from the next sign, you may have taken an exit, platform or shopping-corridor branch. Return to the last confirmed sign rather than continuing in the hope that the route reconnects.
Elevators can follow a longer route than stairs or escalators. Look for the accessibility symbol and allow passengers to exit before entering. Never carry a heavy case on an escalator in a way that blocks or endangers other passengers.
Step 3 — Confirm the fare gate before tapping or scanning
Read the operator name on the gate or nearby machine. Use a transport card only where the metropolitan or AREX fare path supports it, and use the KORAIL ticket where the intercity train requires it. Do not tap several cards from a wallet at once.
If the gate rejects the fare medium, step aside and read the message. Check whether you are at the wrong operator, using the wrong ticket type, or need staff assistance. Repeated tapping can make the record harder to explain.
Step 4 — Recheck the live departure board
For KTX or another reserved train, match train number, departure time, destination and platform on the live board. For AREX, match the service type and departure. For Seoul Metro, match the line number and direction or terminal shown in the route app and station signs.
Platforms can be posted or changed after you enter the station. Keep the board visible until the platform is confirmed and listen for current announcements. Ask staff if the visual information conflicts with the saved booking.
Step 5 — Board the correct train and car
At a reserved intercity platform, compare the train number and car position before boarding. A train on the correct platform may not be your train if departures are close together. Keep luggage within the operator’s designated areas and do not block aisles or doors.
For urban transit, compare the next station or direction after boarding. If it is wrong, leave at the next safe station and reroute. Do not attempt to force open closing doors.
If you reach the wrong level or exit
Stop and locate a station map or staff desk. Show the exact next operator, train number and time. If you have gone outdoors, use the official station entrance and signage rather than following an unofficial shortcut through traffic or vehicle areas.
If you entered the wrong paid area, do not tailgate or climb over a barrier. Use the intercom or staffed gate, explain the mistake and follow the operator’s adjustment process. Keep the rejected ticket and transaction record until the issue is resolved.

Accessibility, luggage and meeting points
Travelers using elevators should follow the accessibility route even when it looks less direct. Do not assume every stair or escalator path has a parallel lift beside it. Ask staff before a tight connection if you need step-free access.
For a group, choose a precise meeting point such as an operator’s staffed ticket counter, information desk or named gate. Main entrance is ambiguous at a station with multiple halls and street exits. Each traveler should keep their own ticket, phone battery and accommodation address.
Frequently asked questions
Is Seoul Station one shared ticket gate?
No. AREX, KORAIL and Seoul Metro are connected but use different fare and boarding paths. Match the operator before entering a gate.
Can I use a Tmoney card for KTX?
Do not treat a metropolitan transport card as a KTX ticket. Use a valid KORAIL booking or ticket for the intercity train.
Are AREX Express and All-stop the same ticket?
No. They are different service products. Confirm the service type, stopping pattern and current ticket conditions before entering.
How long should I allow for a transfer?
