EZL Card in Korea: Buy, Top Up, Use & Refund

Where to buy an EZL card in Korea, top up with won cash, check the balance and use it on transport.

Official-source checked

The short answer

For a straightforward start, take your physical EZL card and Korean won cash to a participating convenience store and ask for a top-up. Confirm the balance before travelling. In Seoul, tap the same card when boarding and leaving a bus. Check the exact card type before relying on shopping payments, app features or lost-card protection.

This guide focuses on a physical prepaid card for everyday travel, with Seoul boarding examples. It is useful if a shop offers you EZL instead of T-money or you already have a POP/eZL card. Mobile EZL, an IC payment card and a visitor-branded package can have different requirements. The logo alone does not settle those questions.

Check a top-up, then plan the last refund

For one existing readable card, an example ₩2,000 balance plus a ₩10,000 cash load should show ₩12,000 before any further travel. Handing over ₩20,000 for that load alone should return ₩10,000 change. Ask for 잔액을 확인해 주세요 and check the same physical card before leaving.

Before departureWhat to do
Still need the last rideKeep its fare on the card. Refunding first can leave you without the planned transport.
Finished travelling; readable small balanceAsk a participating counter about your exact card and amount. Under the dated refund table below, an eligible ₩8,000 balance less the listed ₩500 fee would return ₩7,500.
Balance above the counter limit or unreadable cardUse the operator’s separate procedure; do not assume immediate airport cash repayment.

The refund arithmetic uses the October 12, 2026 source snapshot already documented below; it is not a new refund receipt or a current counter quote. Recheck the operator refund page and confirm card eligibility, fee and branch participation before handing over the card.

Start with the card you actually have

Look for eZL / 이즐 and inspect both sides for an exposed payment chip. EZL’s card-type explanation distinguishes a contactless RF card from an IC-equipped card. Both can provide transport functionality; their retail-payment scope differs.

What you haveWhat to check
Physical RF card without an exposed payment chipTransport use and participating contactless merchants. Do not assume it works in every ordinary card terminal.
IC-equipped EZL cardThe additional chip-payment terms and merchant exclusions for that product.
Mobile app or special visitor productIts own activation, phone, payment and refund rules; do not apply them automatically to the photographed card.

Buy the card, then confirm the travel balance

The operator lists GS25, CU, 7-Eleven and emart24 as purchase channels. A chain listing does not guarantee stock in a particular branch. Show the card name and ask which product is available before paying.

Separate the card purchase price from the balance loaded for journeys. Ask for both amounts and keep the receipt. This guide does not quote one purchase price for all designs or bundles. If you already have a working transport card, compare the practical benefit before buying another one.

Top up with cash at a participating counter

EZL’s recharge page lists cash loading at convenience stores and subway recharge machines, with a maximum stored balance of ₩500,000 per card. That maximum is a limit, not a suggested holiday budget. Start with an amount you expect to use and leave room for another top-up.

  • Show your physical card and ask whether that counter can recharge it.
  • State the amount you want loaded. For example, “이 카드에 만 원 충전해 주세요” asks for a ₩10,000 top-up; it is an example amount, not a required minimum.
  • Use the payment method the counter confirms. Carry Korean won cash for this route; do not assume that being able to buy a card with a foreign credit card means you can reload its balance that way.
  • Keep the card on the indicated reader until staff confirm completion. Check the resulting balance and collect your card, change and receipt before leaving.

For a machine, first check the supported card logo and follow that machine’s instructions. Recharge support can differ by location: the operator’s usage list specifically distinguishes Daegu subway use from machine recharging there. If the machine does not recognize your card, ask staff or use a participating convenience store instead of repeatedly inserting money.

Use the same card to enter and leave

On a Seoul bus, tap when you get on and tap again when you get off. Use the same physical card at both readers and wait for the sound or display response. Seoul’s passenger instructions place the boarding reader at the front and the exit reader by the rear door; the exit tap matters for transfer treatment.

Keep the card separate from other contactless cards while tapping. Do not switch between a physical card and a phone wallet midway through the journey. If a gate or reader rejects the card, pause and ask for help rather than following another passenger through.

Use a separate card for each traveller when you want an uncomplicated subway and transfer journey. Our Seoul bus guide covers stops and boarding in detail; our subway ticket guide explains the single-journey fallback.

Outside Seoul, check the actual route and operator. EZL’s transport coverage list includes regional exceptions and limits taxi use to participating vehicles. Buying a rail ticket at a counter is also different from tapping through a local subway gate: an EZL card is not a KTX reservation.

Do you need an app or a Korean phone number?

The cash-counter process above avoids making app setup your first step. EZL’s app overview describes registering a card and using supported bank, card or phone-payment methods. Those descriptions do not confirm that an overseas-issued card, travel eSIM or foreign phone number will complete registration and payment.

We have not independently tested foreign-number registration, foreign-card top-ups or either phone platform for this guide. If an app asks for identity verification you cannot complete, return to the physical-card cash route. Do not buy a Korean phone plan just because you assume it will unlock every app feature. Ask about child or youth registration separately before expecting a discounted fare; card purchase alone is not proof of discount eligibility.

Refund a small remaining balance before departure

For a readable physical card, the operator’s normal-card refund table lists these convenience-store limits, checked October 12, 2026:

Swipe or scroll to see all columns.

CounterReadable balance eligible for this counter
GS25, 7-Eleven, emart24Up to and including ₩20,000
CUUp to and including ₩30,000

The table lists a ₩500 refund fee and excludes the card purchase price. A readable ₩25,000 balance is within CU’s listed ceiling, but above the ₩20,000 ceiling at GS25, 7-Eleven and emart24. If the counter confirms that this card and balance qualify, the amount after the listed fee would be ₩24,500. This is a calculation example, not a tested refund or a guarantee that a branch will process it.

A larger balance or unreadable card follows a different procedure and may involve sending the card and receiving a bank transfer. Do not rely on completing that at the airport minutes before departure. Do not assume the separate bank-transfer route works with an overseas bank account; the checked page does not establish that. Ask the operator before your last day, and keep enough balance for your final transport if you still need it.

If the card is lost or stops working

Do not assume every EZL card has recoverable funds after loss. The operator’s loss-protection rules restrict protection to eligible products and prior registration, with exclusions for some cards. A photograph of the card number is not a substitute for eligibility. Treat the balance on an ordinary card as money you could lose with it.

Reader error despite a balanceRemove other cards from the reader area and ask staff to check the card. Avoid repeated uncontrolled taps.

Card is unreadableKeep the physical card and ask the issuer about its damaged-card refund process.
Card is missingCheck your exact product’s protection rules and registration status. Arrange another fare method for immediate travel.
