What the Short-Term Pass is for

The Climate Card Short-Term Pass is a physical Seoul transport pass for 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 consecutive days of unlimited eligible subway and Seoul-licensed bus travel. It can fit a traveler making repeated journeys inside the covered network, but it is not a nationwide Tmoney replacement and does not include every rail line, bus, airport transfer, or paid mobility service.

This record deliberately excludes the changing 30-day Climate Card and the separate Climate Pass for eligible Seoul residents. The current Seoul notice says short-term passes remain available after the 30-day product transition. Reopen the official policy before relying on any longer-duration product.

Compatibility summary

The checked physical short-term route does not document a Korean phone number, Korean bank card, Korean ID, passport, or mobile app as a condition for buying, charging, and using the pass on eligible subway and bus services. Basic travel is separate from optional or recovery functions that require online registration.

International credit and debit cards are partially supported. Seoul’s March 2026 announcement says internationally issued cards such as Visa and Mastercard can buy the physical Climate Card and charge short-term passes at 440 new vending machines across 273 stations on Lines 1–8. It also documents an average service fee of approximately 3.7%. Acceptance is not a promise for every machine, station, card, issuer, wallet, or authentication route, so keep Korean-won cash and a second card.

Choose and activate the pass

Compare the short-term pass price with the eligible journeys actually planned. Current official prices are KRW 5,000 for 1 day, KRW 8,000 for 2 days, KRW 10,000 for 3 days, KRW 15,000 for 5 days, and KRW 20,000 for 7 days. The reusable physical card costs KRW 3,000 separately.

The activation rule is more important than the price: short-term validity begins on the date the pass is charged, and the official policy says it cannot be charged in advance. Buy the physical card earlier only if useful, but do not load the short-term pass before the intended first travel day.

Use a designated new machine when relying on an international card, read the complete checkout total and fee, and confirm the pass duration before paying. A convenience store may sell the blank physical card without being able to activate the desired pass or accept the same payment method.

Check the service range

Since October 1, 2026, use Seoul’s updated service range: eligible subway stations inside Seoul and Seoul-licensed city/town buses. Subway stations outside Seoul, Sinbundang and GTX are excluded. Incheon Airport T1/T2 are alighting-only exceptions: do not board there with this pass. Seoul-licensed eligible buses may operate beyond the city boundary; buses licensed elsewhere are excluded even inside Seoul. Check both stations and the actual bus operator.

The airport rule is asymmetric. A rider who boards inside the eligible range may disembark at Incheon Airport Terminal 1 or Terminal 2 on AREX, but cannot board at either airport terminal using the Climate Card. Plan a separate airport-to-city ticket or payment method.

Do not identify bus eligibility only by where the bus stops. A Seoul-licensed bus can remain eligible outside Seoul, while a Gyeonggi or Incheon bus may be excluded even when it operates inside Seoul. Check the operator and the live official range.

Tap, register, and refund carefully

Tap the card when boarding and when leaving the subway or bus. The current Seoul policy warns that two missed exit taps can suspend service use for 24 hours from the time of the last boarding. If a gate rejects the pass, stop repeated tapping and ask staff to check the card, validity period, station range, and missed-tap history.

The 1–7-day short-term passes do not include Ttareungi or Hangang Bus. Registering a short-term card does not add those benefits. Refund and account requirements are a separate question; use the current route that matches the original payment method. Korea Untangled has not tested registration or a foreign visitor refund.

Tmoney’s current cash-refund instructions for eligible short-term passes require stopping the card at a supported station machine and applying at T-Town before expiry; a passport may be requested. They then instruct returning three business days after the application to collect cash. The card purchase cost is excluded, and actual use plus a KRW 500 fee is deducted. This route covers the latest eligible pass loaded by cash or a foreign-issued card; other payment routes have separate registration conditions. Do not expect an immediate airport refund.

When not to rely on it

Do not rely on the Climate Card when the itinerary starts at Incheon Airport, extends outside the service range, uses airport or intercity buses, depends on Sinbundang Line, requires Ttareungi, begins on a later date than the charge date, or needs a guaranteed international-card purchase at an unverified machine.

Use standard Tmoney or a separately ticketed route for excluded journeys. Keep a second payment method, Korean-won cash, and the exact station or bus operator. Current signs, machine messages, station staff, operator rules, and official service-range notices take priority over this record.

Limits and safer fallbacks
  • This record covers the physical Climate Card Short-Term Pass for 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 days. It does not cover the changing 30-day product, the separate Climate Pass for Seoul residents, a postpaid product, or every Mobile Tmoney route.
  • Short-term validity begins on the date the pass is charged. The official policy says it cannot be charged in advance, so do not activate it before the intended first travel day.
  • The physical card costs KRW 3,000 separately from the short-term pass. Current listed short-term prices are KRW 5,000, 8,000, 10,000, 15,000, and 20,000 for 1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 days respectively.
  • International credit and debit cards are accepted only through the supported route. Seoul's March 2026 announcement identifies 440 new machines at 273 stations on Lines 1–8 and an average service fee of approximately 3.7%; issuer, network, authentication, machine, and outage failures remain possible.
  • The pass excludes Sinbundang Line, subway stations outside Seoul (except airport alighting), intercity and airport buses, and non-Seoul-licensed buses. Route boundaries can cut across a line, so verify both boarding and exit stations.
  • A rider may get off at Incheon Airport Terminals 1 or 2 after boarding within the eligible range, but cannot board AREX at either airport terminal with the Climate Card. Use a separate airport-to-city ticket or payment method.
  • Tap the card when boarding and leaving. The official policy warns that two missed exit taps can suspend use for 24 hours from the last boarding time.
  • The 1–7-day short-term passes do not include Ttareungi or Hangang Bus. Registering a short-term card does not add those benefits. Refund and account requirements are a separate question; use the current route that matches the original payment method. Korea Untangled has not tested registration or a foreign visitor refund.
  • Korea Untangled did not independently buy, charge, register, tap, ride, transfer, pay with an international card, request a refund, use Ttareungi, or field-test any Climate Card route for this Service record.
  • Tmoney’s current cash-refund instructions for eligible short-term passes require stopping the card at a supported station machine and applying at T-Town before expiry; a passport may be requested.

Compare Climate Card with standard T-money and WOWPASS before paying for the physical card. If arriving through Incheon Airport, use the airport-to-Seoul Guide to choose a separate first ride because the Climate Card cannot be used to board AREX at Terminal 1 or Terminal 2.
