What T-money is for
T-money is a reloadable physical prepaid card used to pay eligible public-transport fares and participating merchants in Korea. The current Korea Tourism Organization traveler page describes Tmoney and EZL as account-free transportation cards sold and loaded at convenience stores nationwide, usable on public transport and at affiliated stores displaying the relevant logo.
Treat the card as stored Korean won, not as a bank card or unlimited pass. The card purchase cost and the balance loaded onto it are separate. Keep the balance modest, keep another payment method, and check the live Tmoney logo or operator notice before relying on it.
Compatibility summary
The checked ordinary adult physical-card route does not document a Korean phone number, Korean account, Korean ID, or passport requirement. It also does not require a mobile app. For iPhone users, Tmoney’s MobileTmoney App Store listing (version 2.4.7, September 1, 2026) documents an international mode without sign-up and Apple Pay top-up with Mastercard, American Express, UnionPay or JCB; Visa is not listed, and an iPhone XS/XR or later is required. That listing is not evidence for Android phones, and Korea Untangled has not tested the app, so foreign-phone support is partial.
For the checked basic physical-card route, foreign-issued credit cards are not supported for purchase or top-up. The current KTO international-visitor transport matrix labels basic Tmoney purchase and top-up as cash only. Tmoney’s official user guide also tells users to present the card with Korean-won cash for top-up.
Do not transfer that rule to every nearby machine or product. New Seoul subway ticket machines, single-use tickets, Climate Card, AREX, KTX, and other services have separate payment and acceptance rules.
Buy and load safely
Buy only from a current Tmoney sales location and confirm that the package says Tmoney rather than Climate Card, Mpass, WOWPASS, EZL, or a single-journey ticket. The official Tmoney guide lists major convenience-store chains and says subway stations provide top-up machines and information-center routes; current branches and services can differ.
For the standard route checked here, carry Korean-won cash. Tmoney’s guide documents top-ups in KRW 1,000 units, from KRW 1,000 to KRW 90,000 per top-up, with a maximum stored balance of KRW 500,000. Start with the next few journeys rather than loading the maximum. Check the displayed balance and keep the receipt when one is provided.
At Incheon Airport, separate three decisions: the physical Tmoney card, the cash balance loaded onto it, and the first airport-rail or bus ticket. AREX Express and other separately ticketed services do not inherit the basic Tmoney purchase rule merely because their machines are nearby.

If your top-up route needs cash, read how to withdraw Korean won at an ATM before joining the machine queue. Keep cash withdrawal and transit-card loading as separate transactions.
Ride and transfer correctly
Use one card per traveler when each person needs a correct fare and transfer history. Tap at the correct reader when boarding and when the operator requires exit tapping. Check the balance display and do not walk through behind another traveler.
Tmoney’s current foreign-language guide documents transfer discounts between eligible subway and bus journeys when the transfer occurs within the stated time limit, with route exclusions and a longer overnight window. Exact fare, transfer count, time limit, tap-out rule, and operator eligibility can change. Follow the current gate, vehicle, or operator instructions rather than relying on a remembered rule.
Child and youth discounts are a separate registration path. The official guide says the card must be registered with date of birth and an ID at a supported convenience store or subway information center. Do not use a discounted card until staff confirm that the traveler and document qualify.
Merchant payment and refunds
A Tmoney logo can indicate acceptance at a participating merchant, but it is not a guarantee for every branch, item, terminal, online checkout, taxi, or transaction. Ask before the purchase if Tmoney is the only available payment method, and keep cash or another card.
Refund rules depend on balance, location, card type, and whether the request is full or partial. Tmoney’s current guide says the card purchase cost is excluded from its standard refund and documents a KRW 500 service fee. It also restricts partial refunds to particular service locations and amounts. Reopen the live guide before loading money that must be recovered before departure.
Never confuse a single-journey ticket deposit-refund machine with a Tmoney balance-refund point. Ask station staff or an official Tmoney location which service handles the card and current balance.
When not to rely on it
Do not rely on Tmoney alone when a route is separately ticketed, the operator or merchant does not display current acceptance, the balance is uncertain, a reader rejects the card, the card is damaged, an age discount is unconfirmed, a refund location is closed, or the remaining cash is needed for another task.
Keep a second payment method and enough Korean-won cash for one important journey. If the card fails, stop repeated tapping, read the displayed message, and ask official station, vehicle, merchant, airport, or Tmoney staff. Current signs, fare rules, staff instructions, and safety directions take priority over this record.

Rechecked physical-card cash top-up, airport store listings, refund limits and the separate iPhone MobileTmoney route. Physical-card loading starts at KRW 1,000, with KRW 90,000 per top-up and KRW 500,000 stored-value limits. The international iPhone app route is separate from plastic-card loading and Wallet-only top-up.
