What NAVER Map is for
NAVER Map is NAVER Corp.’s web, Android, and iPhone map service for discovering places, searching Korean addresses and businesses, comparing routes, checking public transport, using walking or driving guidance, viewing street and aerial imagery, and saving places or routes. The current official listings document Korean, English, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese maps plus English navigation.
Use it as a primary Korea-specific map reference, but keep the destination’s exact Korean name and road address outside the app. A map result is not a guarantee that the correct branch, entrance, floor, platform, business hours, accessibility route, or booking page has been selected.
Compatibility summary
The official map-search and directions materials do not document a Korean phone number, Korean ID, passport, card, or payment as a prerequisite for ordinary map use. Saving places, routes, buses, subway lines, and stops is different: NAVER’s current help says those saved features require a NAVER login.
NAVER announced in June 2026 that eligible foreign visitors can use passport verification to access supported NAVER Booking, NAVER Order, and payment services without a Korean mobile phone number. Passport verification is therefore marked accepted, not generally required. Those optional commerce features have their own venue, availability, identity, and payment conditions and should not be confused with basic map search or directions.
Korea Untangled did not independently test current account creation or whether a particular screen accepts a foreign phone number, so foreign-phone support remains unknown. A Korean-specific account or Korean ID is not documented as required for the checked traveler route, but a NAVER login is still required for saved information.
How to set up the app
- Install NAVER Maps, Navigation only from the listing published by NAVER Corp., or use the official
map.naver.comweb route. - On Android, NAVER documents MY → Settings → Language → English. On iPhone, use the in-app Language route or iPhone Settings → NAVER Map → Preferred Language.
- If Preferred Language is missing on iPhone, add one of NAVER Map’s supported languages under Settings → General → Language & Region, then return to the app setting.
- Grant location only when current-position search, nearby results, walking guidance, or navigation is useful. Review every other permission separately rather than enabling all requested access.
- Before the first time-sensitive trip, search one public destination, compare the route with the operator’s current information, and save the critical boarding, transfer, exit, and final-walk details outside the app.
The current official help says the language feature is supported from NAVER Map 5.1.3 and lists Android 8.0 and iOS 16.0 as the minimum systems for version 5.0 or later. Store requirements and menu positions can change, so reopen the live listing if the documented path does not match the device.
Search and route safely
Search the official English name first. If the result is missing or ambiguous, copy the exact Korean business name or full Korean road-name address from the accommodation, venue, ticket, or booking confirmation. Compare the city, district, category, phone number when available, branch label, full address, and pin.
For routing, set explicit named start and destination points when the current-location marker is uncertain. Read the complete itinerary rather than only the headline travel time: confirm the boarding stop, line or bus number, direction, transfer, arrival stop, exit, final walking segment, and any last-service or accessibility constraint. Recheck live arrivals and signs immediately before boarding.
Keep a privacy-safe screenshot, the Korean destination text, and one fallback outside NAVER Map. Do not expose a home or hotel-room location, live location dot, account identity, recent searches, or future itinerary in a public screenshot.
Account, passport, permissions, and privacy
NAVER login is required for saved places and routes. The 2026 passport-verification route expands access to supported bookings, orders, and payments for foreign passport holders without a Korean mobile phone number, but it does not make every business, product, payment method, or language universally available.
The current store disclosures describe location, personal information, search or usage activity, identifiers, diagnostics, and user content among data that may be handled depending on platform and feature. Android also documents separate purposes for microphone, phone, contacts, files or media, camera, notifications, and nearby-device access. Grant only the access needed for the chosen task and review the current platform privacy panel before adding account or identity information.
When not to rely on it
Do not rely on NAVER Map alone when the exact branch cannot be verified, the pin conflicts with the venue’s official address, a route ignores a closure or last-service boundary, an accessibility need is unconfirmed, an optional booking or payment screen unexpectedly asks for unsupported verification, or the connection is failing. Cross-check the venue, transport operator, official Korean Road Name Address system, staffed desk, or another verified map source.
NAVER Map is a planning and navigation aid. Current signs, staff instructions, transport rules, road conditions, venue notices, and emergency directions take priority over a saved or cached route.
