How to Use NAVER Map in English

What this guide covers

Use this guide if you need to:

• change the NAVER Map mobile app to English;
• search for a hotel, station, attraction, or restaurant in Korea;
• compare public-transport or walking routes;
• keep enough route information to recover from weak mobile data; or
• understand which functions may require login.

This guide does not cover driving navigation, restaurant booking, NAVER account identity verification, payments, or a guarantee of step-free access. It also does not claim that the NAVER Map website and mobile app have identical controls.

Before you start

Have these ready:

• an iPhone running iOS 16 or later, or an Android phone running Android 8 or later, according to the current official listings;
• mobile data or Wi-Fi;
• the destination name and Korean road address from the accommodation, venue, or official booking confirmation;
• a second way to store information, such as the phone’s Photos or Notes app;
• enough battery for the journey; and
• a staff-assisted fallback for the airport, station, hotel, or venue.

Do not wait until you arrive at a crowded station to learn the interface. Complete one sample route before departure and repeat the check after the app updates.

Step 1 — Install the official app

Confirm that the app is named NAVER Maps, Navigation and the developer is NAVER Corp. Use the Apple App Store listing or Google Play listing.

The store listings currently describe place search, transit directions, real-time arrival information, walking and driving routes, street view, bookmarks, and multilingual maps. Do not install a similarly named app from a third-party download page.

Step 2 — Change the mobile app to English

NAVER’s current help page gives different paths by operating system.

Android

1. Open NAVER Map.
2. Select the MY profile icon beside the search box.
3. Select the Settings gear.
4. Open Language.
5. Choose English.

iPhone

1. In NAVER Map, open MY → Settings → Language.
2. If the app sends you to iOS Settings, open NAVER Map → Preferred Language → English.
3. If Preferred Language is missing, NAVER instructs users to add English under Settings → General → Language & Region, then check the NAVER Map language setting again.

The official help page says the in-app language setting is supported from NAVER Map 5.1.3. The current store listings require iOS 16 or later and Android 8 or later. Because no device was tested for this guide, treat the paths above as the operator’s documented paths, not proof that every current screen is identical.

Step 3 — Search for the exact destination

Use the main search box to look for a place, address, bus, or subway station. NAVER’s official app listing describes these as supported search types.

For a hotel, restaurant, or attraction:

1. Try the official English name.
2. If the result is missing or ambiguous, paste the Korean road address from the venue or booking confirmation.
3. Compare the district, street address, phone number when available, and map pin.
4. Check whether the result is the correct branch and entrance area.
5. Keep the Korean name and address in Notes even if the English result is clear.

NAVER states that its road-address results use data collected from Korea’s official road-name-address system. This does not eliminate branch, entrance, or recently changed listing errors. Do not choose a result merely because the English name looks similar.

Step 4 — Set the correct origin and destination

Open directions and enter the origin and destination. NAVER’s mobile help says that if no origin is set, the app can use the current location. It also documents two manual alternatives: choose a point on the map or press and hold a place on the map to set it as the origin or destination.

Before accepting the route:

• verify that the blue location marker is actually where you are;
• replace Current location with a station, terminal, hotel, or exact map point when GPS is uncertain;
• compare the destination pin with the Korean address; and
• remember that public-transit routing does not support an added waypoint, while car, walking, and bicycle routes can support waypoints.

If location permission is denied, use a named origin or select the point manually. Granting location can help with directions, but unrelated permissions are not required for typing an address.

Step 5 — Compare public-transport routes

Choose the transit mode and compare more than the first result. NAVER’s current help describes four sorting options:

• best route;
• least time;
• least transfers; and
• least walking.

The route details can include total time, fare, transfers, and separate walking, bus, and subway segments. Open the full route and record:

• the correct boarding stop or station;
• bus number or subway line;
• direction of travel or terminal station;
• transfer stop and walking connection;
• exit number when shown;
• final walking segment; and
• a second route in case the first one stops operating or is disrupted.

NAVER also documents transit guidance from a route-detail screen and real-time bus information from search, stop pages, and route details. Real-time information is useful but is not a guarantee: NAVER warns that public-transport data can differ from actual conditions.

Step 6 — Check the final walking section

For a walking-only route, NAVER documents three route options: recommended, main roads first, and avoid stairs. NAVER provides walking-route results only when the origin and destination are within 50 km of each other in a straight line. Avoid-stairs routing also avoids escalators; it does not certify an accessible route. It also states that walking routes can differ from the road and crossing conditions on site.

Use the walking section as planning information, then check the real street:

• confirm the station exit;
• look for the correct side of a large road;
• check whether a building entrance is inside an alley, mall, station, or underground area;
• obey barriers, crossing signals, construction signs, and staff directions; and
• never treat avoid stairs as a verified step-free-access guarantee.

For accessibility needs, confirm elevators and accessible entrances with the transport operator or venue. A map option is not a substitute for current facility information.

Step 7 — Save a route that survives weak data

NAVER’s help says that saving places and routes inside NAVER Map requires login with a NAVER ID. This guide did not test NAVER signup, foreign phone numbers, passport verification, or bookmark syncing.

You can still make an independent travel record:

1. Take screenshots of the route overview and critical transfer details.
2. Save the destination’s Korean name and road address as text.
3. Record the boarding stop, bus or line, transfer, exit, and final walking cue.
4. Keep the accommodation or venue phone number if it is publicly listed.
5. Refresh the route when you regain data; a screenshot is a fallback, not live guidance.

Do not publish or share screenshots containing your home, hotel room, account name, saved-place list, current location, or device notifications.

NAVER Map web is a separate interface

The official NAVER Map website can be a useful browser fallback when the app will not open. The website is not proof of what the current iPhone or Android app looks like. A web screenshot must be labeled as web, and mobile-app instructions must be illustrated only with an actual mobile-app capture.

The published guide does not reproduce a NAVER Map web map image because commercial reuse permission for map imagery was not established. Use the official link above to open the live service.

What English mode does and does not promise

The current official listings state that NAVER Map provides Korean, English, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese maps and English navigation. NAVER’s help also documents English as a selectable app language.

That supports these conclusions:

• English is an official interface option.
• Place, bus, subway, route, transit, and navigation functions are advertised.
• English mode is not an unofficial translation layer.

It does not support a promise that every business name, menu, review, user photo, disruption notice, booking page, or third-party payment screen will be translated. Keep the Korean destination text visible and use a separate translation tool when a place page remains Korean.

If NAVER Map still fails

Use this fallback order:

1. Retry once with the exact Korean road address and a manually selected map point.
2. Replace current location with a named station, terminal, or hotel.
3. Open the official NAVER Map website in a browser and label it clearly as the web interface.
4. Use another operator’s current map service only after verifying the official site or store developer.
5. Show the saved Korean address to an airport, station, hotel, venue, or tourist-information staff member.
6. Follow current signs and safety instructions instead of forcing a route that conflicts with conditions on the ground.

Useful Korean phrases

• 이 주소가 맞나요? — Is this the right address?
• 이 역으로 가고 싶어요. — I want to go to this station.
• 몇 번 출구로 나가야 하나요? — Which exit should I use?
• 이 길이 맞나요? — Is this the right way?

Show the full Korean address with the phrase. A place name alone may not distinguish branches.

Privacy and screenshot safety

The official Android listing says location is used for directions and navigation; the listed permission purposes also cover voice search, calls, camera-based functions, notifications, and nearby devices. Actual permission prompts depend on the feature and operating-system version. Apple’s store page provides the developer’s privacy disclosures for iOS. Review the live permission prompt on your own device because disclosures and behavior can change by version and feature.

For screenshots used on Korea Untangled:

• use a public sample destination;
• hide account names, profile photos, saved lists, recent searches, current location, notifications, and device identifiers;
• record the operating system, app version, and capture date;
• label store listings, NAVER Map web, and the mobile app as different sources; and
• never replace a missing real screenshot with an AI-generated imitation of the interface.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Korean phone number to use NAVER Map in English?

NAVER’s current sources do not document a Korean phone number as a requirement for map search or directions. Saving places and routes requires a NAVER login. This guide did not test signup, foreign-number acceptance, or every signed-out mobile-app action, so optional account features remain Unknown — recheck in app.

Can I use NAVER Map without an account?

NAVER advertises map and route functions and separately states that saving places and routes requires login. Its official sources do not provide a complete current guest-mode matrix. Test the exact search and route you need before departure, and keep an independent screenshot and Korean address.

Is every place name translated in English mode?

The operator promises supported map languages and English navigation, not complete translation of every place name, review, notice, or linked page. Keep the Korean place name and road address available.

Can I download an offline NAVER Map?

This guide found no current official source that was clear enough to promise a general offline-map download for the traveler workflow described here. Do not assume it exists. Save route screenshots and text, then refresh the live route when data returns.

Does “avoid stairs” guarantee an accessible route?

No. NAVER documents an avoid-stairs walking option but also warns that walking routes can differ from conditions on site. Confirm elevators and accessible entrances with the relevant operator or venue.

Is a route screenshot enough for the whole trip?

No. It is a recovery aid. Timetables, disruptions, exits, stops, and walking conditions can change. Refresh the route and check live signs before traveling.
